FC BrewHaHa Game Highlights

July 22nd, 4-2 Victory vs. The Other Team

Nothing like a bit of revenge. Though quite honestly revenge is not nearly so sweet as just plain beating a team full of a bunch of whiners. I mean let's face it, this is a friendly league and they couldn't even be bothered to shake hands? Wow! That's just plain sad. Sure, as Heather says it's all about the "W", but the only "W" those guys got was for being "W"einers. (okay, that was just a stupid joke, but I refuse to erase it).

But about the game! DiCarlo came up big with a couple more goals, and a 3 point effort by Brian helped catapult him past Marie into second place in the points race. The really interesting thing was that 3 of our 4 goals originated off of throw ins, with Erin assisting on 2 and Skipper picking up an assist off a beautiful header into the bottom corner from Brian. (if anyone was wondering what an "offensive header" looks like, that's it!). Nahass also picked up a goal in his return from a hamstring injury, to round out the scoring.

Overall, we played a good game, but there were a few dicey moments. There was a period of about 3 minutes in the first half during which the ball did not leave our 18 yard box even once. We were lucky that our opponents proved just as incompetent as we did in getting a good touch on the ball, but we need to be careful not to let this happen because we certainly deserved to be punished for our shoddy clearing attempts. Thanks to Christa for some nice saves at the start of this mess to keep them off the scoreboard in the first half.

In the second half they came out strong, and pressured us for a good 10 minutes. This is quite typical of our last several games, and is a result of the teams moving up several strong forwards to try and score since they start the second half down a goal or two. Strategically I prefer to try to "weather the storm", which we have done successfully, and eventually things return to normal. I like to avoid moving players back or playing more defensively, since then we just get caught in a defensive rut and forget about offense. However we should be aware of this, and pay special attention to backchecking and defensive play at the start of the second half - or eventually we will meet a team that will capitalize on this, and score quickly at the start of the second half.

Scoring Summary:

  1. JeffDC from Brian and Erin
  2. JeffDC from Erin
  3. Nahass from Brian and Sykes
  4. Brian from Skipper

Best Touch of the Game: Brian's header. Where were the videocameras?

Second Best Touch of the Game: Heather's screaming pirouette back-heel, which she made to seem unintentional but was clearly a brilliant support pass back to Pat on defense.

Brian has also requested that I thank the defense, an awkward job since I happen to be one of them. It's certainly true however that we haven't allowed many goals at all this season, in no small part due to the play of especially Pat and Bea on the outside D, but also Erin and Eileen who have featured in the back, and also Arthur and Ramsey who have both played some very good stopper for us. You guys keep scoring, we'll keep stopping their forwards!:-)
