The second day of the tournament dawned cloudy, but would prove to be much more fulfilling than day 1. We started early against Quicksilver, perennial whipping boys of the PACSL. However our luck and scoring continued to be sour as we only managed to find the back of the net once this game. Ramsey scored on a good through ball from Arthur to take the lead in the first half. It then looked as if we were going to score a second time off a corner kick from Marie, with their goalie beaten and the ball travelling into the net. However we were denied a goal by one of their players who not only caught, but then held onto the ball. The player was ejected with a Red Card, but instead of being awarded a goal we were given a penalty which we did not convert. We held on to our lead for the rest of the first half and most of the second until they managed to score late in the game after a scramble in our box off a corner kick, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
At 11 o'clock we faced Big Happy Team C, who were hungry for a victory as they were battling it out for first place in the division. Already locked into 4th place just in front of Quicksilver, we had nothing to gain but pride from a victory. But a victory it would be as we finally hit our stride in the tournament over on Gunn fields. Strong play from Patrick up front helped to revitalize our offense, and our passing and defensive play finally looked like it did in the regular season. We scored late in the second half on a patented BrewHaHa throw in play (Dave from Christian), and that was all teh scoring as we held on for the victory. This was probably our best effort of the tournament as we really maintained the balance of the play and had a strong effort both offensively and defensively.
We played immediately after this at Gunn again, with onlly a 45 minute break which I think worked to our benefit as we did not have time to cool down and tighten up completely. We faced Rhythm and Blues, on the pretense of a "fun and friendly" game, though I might argue that all games in PACSL should be like that. We continued our strong play which we showed against BHTC, though we did scramble more in the back. Marie was hungry for a goal, and converted a long run to put us up 1-0 in the second half off a big kick from Clark. She struck again in the second on a wicked shot, but only as far as the crossbar and we finished the game with a 1-0 victory (and 7th place out of 10 overall:-).
The tournament was not our brightest moment, but Sunday proved to be a lot of fun and a good end to the season. Congratulations on a wonderful season of soccer everybody. Even though we did not end up quite like we wanted this weekend, let's not lose sight of the fact that we won 8 out of 10 games during the regular season, and played an awful lot of fabulous soccer, and had a lot of fun too. I personally want to thank everyone who gave all of their time and effort to the team. I've been playing soccer for close to 20 years and I must say that this was by far the most enjoyable season of soccer I have had in my life. I'm looking forward to more fun with FCBrewHaHa!
