|July 24th, 2005 vs. Big Happy Team TOo|
Brian: A pretty hot day for 10:15am. Big Happy were not all that big, but are pretty happy. Their star player seemed to be their left winger, a fast (but not furious, cuz that's not happy) girl with decent ball skills. Too bad Donna and Bea shut her down well for most of the game.
The game was pretty boring to start with, not so snappy passing, and we were tentative. DiCarlo got a pass and tried a new move. [Recall "The DiCarlo" move which was patented in the 2003 season] This one is called "DiMud," where you dribble fast through a puddle, leaving the ball for your teammate Grant to take and put a good shot into the goal.
We tested them a bit more in the first half - nice crosses from Heather. Some good shots from Grant, and generally good passing on the wings. Gael made some nice saves, but they were able to score after some slight lapses by us to make it 1-1. Late in the first half, on the "no-good-deed-goes-unpunished" theme, Jen was pressuring their goalie (good hustle Jen) when he cleared the ball right at her arm. Later we found the bad news that Jen's arm is fractured. We hope you recover quickly, Jen.
The first half ended 1-1. In the second half we dominated a bit more, though managed to miss the goal in almost all possible ways. Thomas' "off-the-tree" shot was a highlight of these options. However, there was good hustle all around, and they really didn't have much of a shot for most of the half.
Midway through the half, DiCarlo chased a Grant shot, and put away the rebound to make it 2-1. We pressed more, but gave them a few chances near the end for Gael to show off with some nice saves.
Next week will be tougher - let's continue the good hustle and try to get a few more shots on goal.
Mike: And congratulations for nobody falling on their ass in any of the puddles. I watched a guy from the game before us get all muddied up that way, and he was pretty annoyed. I think he wanted the ref to call a penalty on the other team for his own incompetence, but not even our refs are that bad! We actually had a fun reffing incident this game where Grant and their tall-but-not-really-skinny guy were fighting for the ball. At one point the guy grabbed Grant's arm and threw him to the ground. He realized this was completely illegal, so he stopped playing. Too bad the refs never called anything. That was good for about seven seconds of confusion.
*We can't really give an assist to the Puddle, so Brian is credited with the 3rd assist on this one
